Hi all, complete noob so go easy please.
I've had to start doing some commutes in my Born so wanted to get a (front only) dashcam. My car is on PCP so I want a plug n play style camera - nothing I have to look to hardwire down to a fusebox like I had to with my previous dashcam.
I did some research and spotted the Fitcamx - am I right in thinking this is literally a case of slotting it onto the rearview mirror and it is good to go (following a simple hook up)? No wiring through the cabin to the fuse box etc?

Hi and welcome. However, when you're new to a forum it's a good idea take a look at previous threads and to use the search option.
If you do, you'll find and extensive thread abut the fitcamx in in the main CUPRA Born chat forum. It should answer all your questions.

I had a nextbase 522 installed. The camera was installed by RS Connect who were totally incompetent. They had to come 5 times to sort out all the issues then today the front camera fell off the screen because the sticky pad failed. Even though the camera is only 5 months old neither Nextbase or RS Connect will sort it out.

Go back to the supplier and tell them that as its not fit for purpose you'd like them to either fix it, or a full refund.

They can't just fob you off, as up to 6 months, under the sale and supply of goods act, it is up to them to prove it isn't a manufacturing fault, otherwise its assumed that the fault was present when the goods were delivered.

Email them to get it dated and in writing.

Not sure if there's an ombudsman for car accessories, which would be the next step in most cases, but maybe try citizens advice or trading standards.

If they installed it and its fallen off, then it's either faulty (sticky pad not sticky enough), or they didnt onstall it correctly (didn't clean the window sufficiently)

I spent an hour on the phone to the supplier (Nextbase) and got nowhere. They apparently have a disclaimer on their website that states that the sticky pads aren't covered in the warranty. I know they are on dodgy ground but it is easier for me to fix the problem. I intend to give them a one star review on Trustpilot along with the installer RS Connect.

But that's the thing, it's got nothing to do with the sticky pad being given a warranty, a product must be fit for purpose and expected to last a reasonable length of time, which obviously depends on the product, bit for an electronic product, such as a dash cam you would expect it to last for a few years.

Your contract is with the supplier, I.e. the retailer that sold and installed the product.

What they are doing is not fulfilling their legal obligation, and they will fob you off until you get tired of trying to sort the problem out.

Put it in writing, explaining the fact and then contact trading standards, or a similar organisation, to help sort it out.

I find that a lot of services and quality of products are going quickly downhill at the minute, and if its not brought to the attention of the right people it'll carry on.

Why have you hijacked the OP's post with something that has very little to do with his question?
If you want to discuss your individual problem why not open your own thread?

I can see that the conversation has strayed from what the op wanted to know but I merely wanted to warn him about one supplier and one installer.

The FitcamX is a good option indeed. If you get the front and rearview combo it's a little more work and requires some cabling for the rear camera, but the front cam is just plug and play. It uses the power from the ACC camera.

Buy cheap and you buy twice. These are popular due to the price and OEM look, but they have a very high failure rate over 2 years (overheating generally).

If you're serious about a decent dashcam with parking monitoring, you want a decent front/back dashcam set up with its own power source, or with 12v battery voltage monitoring so that it'll monitor until it is in danger of running the 12v battery down (about 48h monitoring between drives).

Something decent will be about £250 with front and back cameras - something like a Thinkware F790 2CH. I have had an F770 2CH setup for 7 years and it has been in 4 different cars. Easy to hardwire if you're DIY competent. It doesn't quite look as integrated, but it's quite small and I would pick function over form any day of the week. A dashcam that overheats, or takes poor footage in lower light is a complete waste of money.
