Set the 80% ceiling in the car and use the smart charger to schedule as per your cheap charging times. Getting thecar to schedule charging times will lead to issues.

Official VW recommendations are 80% to 20% in the Summer and 80% to 40% in the Winter. Given that the UK generally has very mild wonters vs most of continental Europe, I wouldn't get too hung up on staying at least 40% in Winter.
