Another interesting chat topic - list your comments against each one in your list:
  • Tesla Model S - Wow, big but very nice drive!
  • Tesla Model 3 - Better size but it needs a Heads UP Display badly
  • Nissan Leaf (newer model) - Wind noise around the A pillar was distracting, no BMS, but interesting all the same
  • Peugeot e208 - nice drive, decent acceleration, strange inside air grilles and small boot / rear - smaller class than I'm used to. Nice car to look at from front
  • Hyundai Kona - Nice size, comfy, heated seat were a novelty, smallish boot but nice height

I have driven a few Teslas, my friend owns one. It is a nice car and that is no understatement but I prefer details in other cars. Outside of that, I have only ever driven hybrids, unfortunately.

BMW i3, brilliant car, just didn’t suit me
Renault Zoe, hated it
Tesla X, fantastic, but no soul
Ford Mustang Mach E, my dream electric car, but it’s a dog in real life, such a shame.
Tesla Y, same as X
VW ID4, nearly bought one, but it just didn’t float my boat
DS4, I was interested in buying one, but then realised they drop in price like an anchor, tbh it was the sales lady that kept my interest as she was very appealing.
Cupra Born, I’m sure it’s not the best option of all the above, but who gives a **** all the others are great cars but the Born has something that appeals to me, the Tesla Y is faster off the line, but I’m a petrol head, ex rally driver, ex Caterham racer and the Born doesn’t do electric like the others, other than the automatic box it takes me back to my Escort MK1 1600, not as fast as a works Aston Martin but I beat the shit out of one on Kophill climb, and I’m betting I’ll have more fun in my Born when it arrives than any Tesla.

Hello everyone

Worked at Nissan Sunderland factory for 33 years.

Got to drive one of the very early leafs, think it was 87th produced.

Thought it was excellent throughout, except range, which everyone knows.

Once left factory with 100% charge. Drove it like I used to drive petrol.

Live 13 miles from factory and when I got home the tortoise was on.

This was a test I was given to do and report back on.

It left an impression and stopped me considering electric until I saw the born.

Regards Michael

Other car is a Model 3... excellent car in the process of being ruined with software updates.
Zoe - Sounds like a UFO, it's generally okay but kept banging my head on the roof when I got out.
MG ZS EV - Okay, but feels overly cheap
MG4 - Pleasantly surprised, feels nice inside and drives/handles well, infotainment is simple to use and you can't beat the price. Prob going to be our replacement for the Tesla text year... wing mirror wind noise at speed though.
Enyaq - Lovely car, ordered one, delivery time was extended repeatedly.
Kona - Too small in the back, front wheels spin for fun with too much of the right foot
Polestar 2 - Really lovely car, great driving position and loved the infotainment. I had the pixel lights on a previous V90 and they were outstanding
Mustang Mach-e - Felt much higher quality than I was expecting, though didn't like the way they mapped the accelerator to behave like an ice car (moment's hesitation before it responds)
Ioniq 5 - Love the exterior looks, infotainment has far too many buttons and I found myself having to lean forward to tap it. Was so disappointed as I so wanted that car (based on how it looked, but I just didn't get on with the infotainment and all the bings and dings it seemed to put out all the time)

Born - It's, I think, the most well-rounded EV on the market today... I would say the MG, but the Born is so much better looking!
58kWh V2 e-Boost in the cheap colour!

I had a Model 3 for a little over 2 yrs and enjoyed it way more than anything I'd driven before. The prior car to that was e330 BMW, my first (and last) BMW. It drove well and was nippy being hybrid but I never felt excited by it. It was functional but the cabin felt really cramped for a relatively big car. The Tesla I did find exciting, hugely so and loved every time I got in in. However, being honest it was expensive and mediocre build quality. No doubt the motors and battery are class leading but the rest of it more Vauxhall than VW. Wind noise felt excessive (mine was early model, didn't have double glazed front windows). The software updates were great fun at the start, not often you get 10% more power after buying the car without doing anything. A lot of the earlier updates were sorting out daft decisions - when you used to engage cruise control it would immediately set it at the speed limit rather than the speed you were doing - crazy. Just as I handed it back they had rolled the latest v11 update which was poor and felt like a lot of good was undone. Last I read they are still getting it back to something a bit more useable. Lack of buttons was frustrating at times, lack of properly working auto wipers and auto high beam also irritating. Now whether the Born gets it right remains to be seen (still waiting) but I think I'll still miss that 4s 0-60 until something else comes along (Smart #1?!)

I’ve driven Leafs, and SAIC vans but owned two Zoes - 22 and 50.
ZE50 on 17” with the wider tyres corners far better than the early ones and is good for annoying the young Corsa lads. Haha!
Serial ‘white’ car buyer.

Why change to a Born (arriving at the weekend)?
Three things really.
Zoes don’t allow heat/cooling when charging. Frozen in winter. We all got suckered in to pay for the optional CCS moving up from 43kW AC. But the CCS only goes at a max of 45kW. It’s slow.
- My Zoe broke down on a weekend while in Germany. It wouldn’t turn off correctly and lock itself. So as it sat it was insecure, ‘on’ and drained the 12V battery in an hour.
Initially I got round that by disconnecting - “no user serviceable parts” yeah…
Monday morning, Assistance booked us into the nearest EV place. Great family run garage. Diagnosed main switching relay, but not allowed to work on it. Have to go to another place - the relay lives in a compartment inside the traction battery holder.
Two days later we left the second place. They said HQ recommended a software update, not part replacement. Car drove great for the next then died completely.
And that was 13 weeks and two days ago. I got my Zoe back yesterday. Renault Assist couldn’t give a ***

Emotional.
Car drives great. But I’d done my homework on ID3 and Born. Been to 2 local dealers to see cars in the colours and figure out what might be available with cars coming in or cancelled orders. Had a test drive.
A friend who’d had 3 Zoes in his family changed to ID3. I’d looked round it and been out for a drive. Nice but a bit pipe and slippers.

So I drive out DSG in Morecambe who got the car fixed, stopped at MG place and looked at MG4. Nope. Far more toys in the Zoe.
Drove farther north homeward to Carlisle. White V2 Boost just in showroom. 😍

I drive these EVs to pay for it…
