Does anyone know whether the USB outlets on the Born will allow for a macbook pro to be charged when a USBC to lightning cable is used? My son wanted to plug his into the rear socket but I was nervous that it might be too current hungry. Grateful for any help.

The manual doesn't exactly say what wattage it can handle, although the 12 volt sockets and system can do maximum 180 watts.
Your MBP would be USBC to USBC and it automatically negotiates charging, if it couldn't supply enough charge it would just not charge and the laptop would tell you so. It wouldn't damage it.

Although the charging does happen off the 12 volt system so without the car running it will drain your battery.

Thanks Tuppaware, that is very helpful. And you are absolutely right - the MBP has a USB C socket not a lightning one (I always seem to confuse them).

I guess the easiest thing is to try it and see (but also encourage my son to charge his laptop before hitching a ride with Dad!).
