DCC - how does it work

Hi

Just wondering how DCC works, physically I mean. We used to have an old Mitsubishi Shogun with electric dampers. A small, flat electric motor rotated the damper shaft and this gave the damper a soft, medium or hard setting. How is this achieved on the born. I’ve read on here that the cars ride much better with DCC. Your thoughts please…
