Cupra Born VZ owners thoughts
Hi I am considering switching from my i30N DCT to the Born VZ and am going for a test drive soon. I've watched numerous reviews on YouTube which in the main seem very positive but would really like to hear from existing owners as to what their experience has been like. thx
Considering the vast amount of info on the forum regarding the original Born, and some good info on the VZ, plus everything else available online, it would be good if you were more specific in what type of info you are looking for, what you are looking for in the car or what might be holding you back from the purchase?

Sat in one today but can't have test drive until next week.
I would be interested to know typical real world mileage on a charge for say a long motorway journey and typical short around town journeys also how much of a reduction when it's cold.
Looking at the spec have been told heat pump not standard but is it worth £900 for use in uk dealer reckons not really needed unless doing a lot of winter miles (i probably won't be)
Some say tyres need to be changed at 11000 miles seems excessive? Dealer reckons 18000.
Front seats seem a bit narrow at front do they give a bit over time?
Finally for now the two none standard wheel types use bigger tyres do they make a significant difference to handling / mileage. I prefer the look of the standard wheels.

I do not own a VZ...yet, it will probably be my car of choice after owning my current model for 5 years.
There are lots of real world range info on the forum for the current 77kw model, so you can use that info. In my experience, cold reduction is easily around 20% for short journeys and maybe 10-15% for longer journeys, but a lot depends on the individual effort to improve it (lower speeds, less cabin heat etc).
I have the heatpump but everything I've read suggests that it's not really worth it, and takes a long time to pay itself off. I have it as I drive in cold weather a lot and want to maximise range, so was willing to pay for it.
Tyres are hard for me to say, since I have winter wheels and tyres for 5 months of the year. I would say between 11k is pretty common, 18k would be a push, something inbetween would be realistic. I am about 50% through mine (I only have summer on for 7 months though) and have done nearly 10k miles, so if I plan to change at about 2.5 to 3mm, then 11k miles is very realistic.
Seats, I find them a little wide and lacking a bit of support (compared to something like an X3), but far better than the park bench type seats in a Skoda.
I have 20" summer and 19" winter, can't compare as it's colder in winter, Cupra Born UK website has a range calculator which shows 203 vs 225 miles depending on the wheel size, could be about right, if you search through Bjørn Nyland videos, he posts a lot of details at the end of his range tests, including wheel size, so maybe some more real world figures there. I do prefer driving on the 20", on the 19", the suspension "chatters" over the bumps, hard to describe, instead if a solid bump, it does a small rattle/chatter after bumps, as if the suspension rebound is setup for the 20" and no optimised for the 19", bit strange as normally the 19" with a higher profile would be better, but the roads are very smooth here so both are fine really.

Thanks for the reply. Went for the test drive this morning and liked it enough to order a VZ with standard wheels and the Pilot Pack L. Decided not to go for the heat pump (apparently there is a supply shortage anyway) as I probably wont be doing that many long cold weather drives so couldn't justify the £900 extra expense and don't think the reduction in range will make a big impact. Will have to see how I get on with the tyres we don't usually swap for winter tyres in UK.
We've done 5,000 miles in ours since September. Can't stop driving itHowy wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2024 7:17 pm Sat in one today but can't have test drive until next week.

Tyres look good so far. If you're racing it then maybe 11,000 but at a guess so far mine will last closer to 18,000
The seat bolsters haven't changed a lot which is a good thing because I was concerned that the constant squashing when getting in and out would have an effect but so far so good.
Not sure the heat pump is worth it. We didn't and haven't been wanting for any extra range in the cold. 79kwh is great anyway.
We've averaged 3.6 miles per kWh over 5,000 miles which is really good. Obviously it'll drop a bit now over winter.
Anything else you'd like to know? I've done a couple of videos about mine on YouTube and I'm about to do the 5k update.
Thanks for the info my next questions relate to charging. Cupra are offering me the free ohme charger I will probably go for the pro version which has a tethered cable. I'm thinking of having this installed in the garage so I can charge indoors or out. So what I'd like to know is what people think is the best ev tariffs to go for. I do have solar panels so they may help
Also what if any provider do you use for charging at fast chargers around UK? Thx

Depends on tyres, with winter tyres I drive quite regularly on untreated roads in the Born and my MX5 and it’s just a normal drive, 10cm of snow with ice underneath, on summer tyres with RWD the traction control might stop you getting anywhere, and braking is not fun, I would say you should at least switch to all seasons.
