There needs to be a clearer way to determine:
1. What software version you are actually running.
2. What software version you are eligible to get.

I assume there must be a hardware difference if the garage are telling me I am on the latest version with 3.2.0 when plenty of people are on software newer than that. Either that or they don't want to spend any money updating software in the garage for people on software that is deemed relatively recent. The Cupra website is obviously not being updated if it's saying 3.2.1 is the latest when people with newer cars are on 3.5 etc.

The latest update Dealers can install is 3.2.1. If you have less than that, 3.2.1 is the latest you can get.

Factory cars have been coming with 3.5 or later for about a year at this stage, however they can not be updated any further at present.

That's correct. 3.2.1 is the latest that a car can be updated to either OTA or by the dealer. Some people in Germany have been getting OTA updates.

New cars have been coming with 3.5 or I think even 3.7, but cars with versions older than these cannot update to them, at least for now. AFAIK the plan is that eventually all cars will be able to get an OTA to 3.7, but I have no idea when that would be.

As for version 4.0 which is on the new Born VZ and more recent MEB models like the VW ID.7, our Borns will never get that version as it requires new hardware.

3.4.1 has just been released OTA... And over the next 6 weeks it should be downloaded to the car.

My car is from 2023 January and has never received any updates. It has the factory installed 3.2.0

VAG group really is a s**t show when it comes to updates.

A car worth £30k to £40k that relies on tech as a whole and you're not even guarenteed you'll get the latest update.

They really are the Android equivilent of the car world.

VAG group cars may well be built to a much more German standard but the likes of Tesla really show them up when it comes to software. My friends 2020/2021 Tesla is getting a free update to enable Matrix LED headlights :o

It was the same story with their Flagship Golf 8 at the time. I had an R-Line eTSI DSG model and although the car was performant, the infotainment really was not and a similar situation - newer built cars got newer hardware with better SOCs/CPUs/GPUs which fixed the frankly awful performance of the infotainment system yet I was one of those who suffered.

I've said this in another post but sadly I really think this will be my last VAG group car.

Even my Kia ProC'eed GT Line S was far more reliable from an infotainment/car perspective.

To be fair, those Model 3s were shipped from the factory with Matrix LED headlights, but the software was configured so the matrix part was disabled and they functioned just like normal LED headlights.

The software update just enabled the matrix feature, and they did it like that because they were waiting for regulatory approval for the matrix feature.

As for VAG group cars being bad at software updates, it's pretty much the same for all the "legacy" car manufacturers. They still haven't made the mental shift about software being a fundamental part of the car these days, especially EVs. They will get there eventually though.

My car from March 2023 is not showing this in the VIN checker. It came with 3.2.1 factory installed. Also, that doesn't look like an OTA update, but one that you have to do at the dealer.
Either way, at least there is some movement on software updates.

Yet the dealer tells me they can't give me 3.2.1.

When you read about the issues the garages have had updating software in the car and the duration the cars have been off the road, I suspect we will never see major updates done over the air. Then you consider the cost for them if they get the garages to do this and you also see them being very reluctant to use that route unless there is a major issue they feel obliged to fix.

When I had my Fiat Abarth, you downloaded the update via the internet, put it on a USB stick, plugged it in the car recognized that you had updated software on your stick and the update started.

I dropped my car at the dealer this morning for a different issue and the said they're going to do a software update at the same time. Will see what version it is when I get it back!

Edit now looks like this:
